Talking to Business Insider, during his career, recruiter Rod Adams says he has interviewed around 5000 candidates and in all that time is always looking for the same type of person – a good listener who follows up after the interview.

“When the follow-up is personal, that’s when it stands out,” Adams told Business Insider. “They picked up on something in the conversation that they referred back to in the follow-up.”

Adams goes on to say that a personalised follow up can be achieved by thinking back to what was discussed in the interview, whether that be a mutual topic of interest or a book recommendation and being sure to refer to this in your follow up email/call.

As well as this, make sure you’re follow up is on the same day as the interview so that the conversation is fresh in both yours and the interviewers’ minds.

This demonstrates that you listened during the interview and were engaged throughout.

“That personal touch to the follow-up is something I see multiple candidates do that has been impactful,” Adams summarised.
